Human Rights Watch calls on the United Nations to examine enforced disappearances in Bangladesh

Human Rights Watch (HRW) has called on UN human rights experts to conduct impartial investigations into security officials' enforced disappearances in Bangladesh. It asked them to take more efforts to hold senior Bangladesh security forces personnel responsible, end enforced disappearances, and prevent future violations.

HRW established a website to track and profile the cases of 86 Bangladeshi victims of enforced disappearance. Brian Adams, the Asian director of Human Rights Watch, chastised Bangladeshi authorities and the Awami League leadership for ridiculing victims and blocking investigations on a regular basis.

Finally, victims, witnesses of enforced disappearances, and family members were interviewed for a detailed study. According to the study, Bangladeshi authorities have persistently failed to investigate and prosecute individuals involved for enforced disappearances. According to HRW, authorities employ enforced abduction and the fear of enforced disappearance to suppress anyone who could criticize the administration.
